Bedford's Best Wine and Cheese Experience

Waxing on…

Well, I made beer at home last month. A nice Pale Ale that I bottled and have been examining closely in the refrigerator for the last two weeks. It’s gorgeous. Sunday it gets tasted. If it is any good at all (and I’m quite certain it will be), I’ll bring a few bottles up to Bizzi’s for discriminating beer tasters to critique. Don’t know if you noticed, but the White House released their own Honey Porter and Honey Ale recipes, and with the election coming up, I’m going to brew up some White House Honey Ale (without the White House Honey – I’ll use something local). We’ll pop it on election night regardless of who wins — just get out there and vote!

Fall vegetables and fruits are starting to appear – pears, apples, pumpkins, butternut squash. Love those foods! As we fall into fall, our menu will have a few seasonal adjustments. For example, next week we’ll be changing our Spinach with Fruit Salad – we’re adding tart Granny Smith Apples, Dried Cranberries, Toasted Walnuts, and a crumble of creamy Bleu Cheese. Several other new items will be appearing — Crisp Roasted & Herbed Airline Chicken, Grilled Salmon that can be added to salads, a lunch-time Grilled Beef Filet. Crazy good desserts, and other good stuff, too.
We’ll be offering some great German Oktoberfest brewskis & food to match next month, so don’t miss them. And mark your calendars for our Wine & Food Pairing Dinner on Saturday, October 27. We’ll publish the menu, wines, and cost soon.

Lots of info for our Bizzi’s Peeps!

This week is the eleventh anniversary of the attacks of 9/11/2001, and I, like many of you, can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when it became clear that tragic and terrible things were happening on that fateful morning.  In the top floors of North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, there was a restaurant called Windows on the World where diners & employees could see far and wide.  Almost all the restaurant’s employees perished in the attack, as did more than 100 guests.  To honor their memories this week, we are serving a couple of the Windows on the World offerings:  Hazelnut Dacquoise, a decadent layered nut, ganache, and Chantilly cream cake, and Egg Creams, a New York City classic beverage without eggs or cream that curious people of all ages can enjoy!

We have Karaoke on Saturday night, September 15th.  Our regular menu will be served until 10 p.m., but singing starts at 8 p.m. — hosted by our favorite KJ, Josh.  We’ll turn out the lights at midnight, but not until we hear lots of good tunes.  Some of us even promise to dance.

Our Fall Menu will be introduced in the next couple of weeks.  We will feature seasonal items, add a few delicious entrees, and highlight special items.  Look for the announcement in your email and our blog!  It will be an exclusive event.

 Hope to see you soon!

Fall Menu Coming!

OK…confession.  My husband (aka The Polar Bear … because, when given a choice, he’ll sleep 22 hours each day … and, as we learned in science back in the day, that’s called “hibernation”) has been diligently watering our new trees here on the property every day.  Now that it’s a little cooler, The Polar Bear only has to water every three days.  Bonus (although the weather here is sure to change).

We’ve been hard at work on our fall menu and will be rolling it out in the next couple of weeks.  And if you haven’t come by in a while, our new Savory Bone-in Pork Chop over Mashers is seriously killer.  The meat is all-natural pork … so come in and taste this melt-in-your-mouth goodness.

Mark your calendars!  Many of you have asked us, so here it is!

Karaoke – Saturday, September 22.  Our faithful KJ (all you with-it peeps already knew that means “Karaoke Jockey”, but it took me awhile to break the code) Josh will be spinning songs (yeah, I’m seriously old) for us, and we’ll heat up the microphones from 8 p.m. to Midnight.  We’ll be serving a full menu until the kitchen closes at 10 p.m.  Wine, beer, & mixed drink features, and no cover charge.  What a fun way to spend a September evening!

We’re brainstorming about a Wine & Food Pairing Dinner in October – details to follow.

Book Review…and New Chef. And Not in that Order.

Well, I just finished reading Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain – a (former) chef in
Manhattan, NY. Wow. I can only say that our lives are much tamer…but it was a hugely
interesting book about running a restaurant and being a chef (versus a good cook). Especially
germane since we have a new chef!

We are excited to have snagged Sarah Hoyer, who graduated from Ballymaloe Cooking
Program in Ireland (oh, so cool) and then Johnson & Wales. She’s been out of school for a few
years and working in our area in some great places, and we are delighted that she’s bringing
her perspective to us at Bizzi’s. Sarah is putting her stamp on our menu, so expect to see some
changes that tie with seasonal foods and locally raised meats & cheeses.

It’s late July and we are all melting in the heat – so don’t forget our ice-cold martinis (and it’s
5:00 somewhere) and beers to go with our cosmopolitan wine selection!

Heads up for July 4th week … and Karaoke!

We will be closed on Tuesday & Wednesday, July 3rd and 4th.  My adorable grandkids are coming to sleep over (and I use the term “sleep” very loosely), and we’ve cleared our calendars to hang out with them.

We will offer our usual Tuesday drink specials (both wine & martinis) on Thursday so you won’t miss out – so watch the fireworks and then come in hungry & thirsty!   Our summer menu is still in place with weekly treats – this week we have Honeydew Melon Sorbet, which nearly makes me forget about the blinding heat outside.

We have another night of Karaoke scheduled:  Saturday, July 14th.  Our terrific DJ, Josh, will start signing up you crooners at 7:30 or so, and then we’ll stay open until midnight.  This time around we’ll be offering a more extended menu for dinner & party foods.  We expect to hear lots of warbling and promise to keep you sated (maybe not with the singing, but certainly with the yummy foods & bevvies).

Call or email us to sign up – 817-281-9500 or queenbee@bizzisbistro.com.

More news to come – next time, I’ll introduce you to our new look and our new employees!

Opus 1 – We’ve got it!

We love tasting our wines, and today we stocked one of our favorites – Opus 1 Cabernet Sauvignon 2005.  OMG – fabulous.  We are continuing to upgrade our wines – I guess it’s a rhetorical question as to whether or not one can actually get sick of tasting new vino (my non-rhetorical answer:  Heck, NO!)…but we’ve added some delicious new quaffs especially geared for our blistering hot Texas summers – wine, martinis, and beer.

Our menu has moved into summer fare also (Obviously I’ve had to try on bathing suits – awesome.  Has to be the worst thing any women of a certain age and size can do.  I’m having a hot flash just thinking about it.).  We have cooler dishes to keep you refreshed.  Chicken Salad, Gazpacho, Key Lime Pie … to name a few.  Plus we have new Sides – Sautéed Spinach, Mushrooms, Veggies, and Steak Fries (that may be one of the sources of my bathing suit issues – but I’m not giving them up).

Coming up:  We’ll be singing Karaoke (well, not me, but I can hum along to the folks that can carry a tune in a bucket) on Saturday, July 14th until midnight.  Sign up!!

Ah, Spring and New Beginnings.

Fruits and vegetables are just gorgeous as spring is in full swing (enjoy it now before the mosquitoes take us all away), so we are taking advantage of it.  This week we’ve added another Spinach Salad, and this one has a Hot Bacon Dressing as well as Bacon (seems to be my theme ingredient), Sliced Egg, Mushrooms, and Red OnionPosole Rojo is back with New Mexico Chiles – just add a little squeeze of lime and … perfection, especially with the Stone-Ground Corn Muffin!  For those of you that are eyeing bikinis this summer (yes, I eye them, too, but only in catalogs), we have a Roasted Red Pepper Soup that is so tasty & good for you that even your bikini will be too big.  Among other items, our Barbecue Pulled Pork Sandwiches are back and so is our Pesto (the basil is spectacular) with Sun-Dried Tomatoes.  Mmmmm.  Desserts:  Crème Brulee, Chocolate Mousse with Chantilly Cream, Bananas Foster, Laura’s Bread Pudding, and Fruit with Chantilly Cream.

We sang and danced ourselves silly on St. Patrick’s Day when we gave it up for Karaoke.  Super fun – so we’ll be scheduling that again, along with another Cheese Class and a Wine Tasting.  And on a personal note, Easter is only a couple of weeks away, and I plan to put away a rasher or two of bacon that day.  Just so you know.

Advice from Queen Bee: Hide Your Pets

I gave up Bacon for Lent. Torture. I’ll be eyeing small animals in about two weeks, and think that there is probably enough barbecue sauce in the world to cover the taste of raccoon.

With weather warming up a bit, we are taking advantage of nice fruits and vegetables and also throwing some spicier foods your way. Since I gave up bacon (yes, I know I already mentioned that, but am craving sympathy) I need something with a kick to it to satisfy my pork cravings! We have a Spicy Crawfish Dip with a little cayenne bite and a new Hot Cheese plate served with Marinara & Ranch. If you haven’t ever tried Halloumi cheese, give it a shot – we’re crazy about it. Some new salads and dressings – Spinach-Strawberry with Strawberry Vinaigrette, Greek Salad with Kalamata Olives, Feta Cheese, and Tomatoes topped with Green Goddess dressing. We have some new soups, too: Clam Chowder, Spicy Tomato Bisque, and Butternut Squash Soup. And new pasta: Ravioli stuffed with Italian Sausage & Parmesan and served with Marinara. For dessert, we have Chocolate Mousse with Chantilly Cream, Bananas Foster with Ice Cream, and Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Icing.

Look for details in upcoming weeks: Karaoke Night on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17th from 7 p.m. to midnight…and our next Cheese Class in early April.
